I love watermelon. It’s one of my favorite things about summer. When I was pregnant with my last child I had a major craving for watermelon…in February which made things difficult.

I suck at picking watermelon.
Every watermelon I’ve chosen this summer aside from one hasn’t been sweet. Some have even been icky inside.
I need help.

U have 2 pic up the watermelon. Put it on ur shoulder tap on it and listen for a hollow sound if it dosnet resound like a hollow ball then its not good. I always pic perfect watermelon…….
I know for cantalope, you smell the end where the stem was, and it should smell sweet. For watermelon, I buy them by the half so they’re already cut open for me. I can never remember if the knocking sound should be more hollow sounding or solid. I wish I had paid more attention when my grandpa would pick them from the garden.
Smell it.
Then tap it, but listen REALLY closely.
Then shake it a bit.
Then wiggle your butt.
Then look around & see if people are watching you, take the melon home & find it might not be good after all.
I agree with the crap shoot, I am the same way with melons!
At least with you it’s just watermelon. I can’t pick good fruit if my life depended on it. Oh what I would do for the perfect strawberry.
I have never been able to pick fruit. I always let my husband do it. It is like he has magic fingers or something because it always is perfect. Now I have a taste for some watermelon, hmmm.
I had an insane drive for watermelon the whole 2nd half of my pregnancy. DH started to just run in and pick up a watermelon, w/o asking…it was that bad.
I thought I was the only one with the ability to pick the absolute worst fruit every single time lol. At least I know I’m not alone in my fight!
omg i love it too
my mom always makes sure i have some in teh house cause of my son and all. the only thing that bugs me about it is… it makes you have to pee really bad xD
It does make me peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
I don’t really like melons of any kind to be honest with you but I always seem to pick out good ones for my family. Maybe that’s the secret–find someone who doesn’t eat it, then have them pick it out for you!
I used to work in a produce department and I really think it was a crap shoot. I would watch people knock on them, sniff them, shake them and ask random other people in the store it was good. I don’t eat melon anymore, I developed an allergy to it, and I miss it!!
I am fruit challenged, to say the least. I do not know how to pick out good fruit and 9 times out of 10, whatever I pick sucks the big wazoo. With watermelon, I inevitably pick one that is *not* sweet but has eleventy-billion and one seeds in it.
If you ever find the trick to how to find out “before” you cut it open that it’s sweet let me know. I’ve tried the whole thumping on it thing, and either I can’t “hear” that is sounds good, or that’s a big old farce! We’ve been blessed with the most delicious cantaloupe though for a friends garden this summer, so that kind of made up for it
