Hunger Games Is Now In Paperback!
The New York Times best seller about a very imperfect Utopia, The Hunger Games: Book 1 by Suzanne Collins is now in paperback. I am eagerly anticipating the release of the final book in the trilogy Mocking Jay next month and I’m so happy to be able to share with five of my lucky readers.
If you haven’t read The Hunger Games yet I highly suggest you do. It’s one of those stories that take you in and you literally can’t stop reading until you’ve
reached the end-which of course makes you wish you hadn’t.
Here’s a bit about The Hunger Games from the publisher:
In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capital surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capital is harsh and cruel and keeps the other districts in line by forcing them to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight-to-the death on live TV. One boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and sixteen are selected by lottery to play. The winner brings riches and favor to his or her district. But that is nothing compared to what the Capital wins: one more year of fearful compliance with its rules. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her impoverished district in the Games. But Katniss has been close to death before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. Bestselling writer Suzanne Collins delivers equal parts suspense and philosophy, adventure and romance, in this stunning novel set in a future with unsettling parallels to our present.
But don’t take my word for it. Stephen King said that he “couldn’t stop reading” The Hunger Games & Stephenie Meyer said that she was “obsessed with this book.”

The Ocean Between Us’, Susan Wiggs Guest Blogs
The Ocean Between Us is being released today in soft cover and I recently had the pleasure of reading this novel by Susan Wiggs’ and welcome her guest post today as part of a blog tour in celebration of this event!
The Synopsis:
Steve Bennett is a perfect navy officer with a perfect navy family, and he’s confident that his world is just the way it should be. But his son wants to be an artist instead of attending the U.S. Naval Academy, and his stalwart and capable wife of 20 years, Grace, is tired of being the perfect navy wife. She wants her own home, and she wants her own career. She’s feeling altogether unsettled, but nothing is more unsettling than the secret her husband has hidden from her their entire marriage. Nothing, that is, until the accident on the carrier.
My thoughts:
As an Air Force wife, this story about a navy family rang true for me on a number of levels. More importantly this is a story that can be enjoyed by anyone. It made me laugh, and cry, hold my breath and when I turned the final page I felt a little like I was saying good bye to a friend-which in true military life fashion, always happens right when we’ve really got to know one another. I highly recommend this novel and personally can not wait to get my hands on some of her other work.

I went to a used book store this weekend. I sorta have this tendency to get lost in bookstores. I love them. As a bonus I got to get lost with one of my oldest and dearest friends. There’s something to be said about walking into a bookstore-especially a bookstore filled with used treasures. I love old books. I love books that are worn from reading. Books are magical to me. Not because they may contain stories of magic-but because of the work that went into creating the story, and the emotion that they can create.
I love to pull the books from their shelves searching for a title or a cover that draws my eye. It’s my own special treasure hunt. Before I decided on the seven books I chose I was walking around with a cumbersome stack of books. I had to force myself to put back about 4 books but was glad for the ones I did find. I finally completed my Harry Potter collection (for the second time.) I look forward to the day that Michael will be old enough to read them. I also found a few books that were on my “must read” list which included John Berendt’s
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and The City of Falling Angels. I also scored a few by Anita Shreve
, I’ve actually not read any of her novels-but I’ve wanted to and soon, I shall.
Things I've Been Doing This Week
So….I thought it be cool to jot down a few things I’ve been doing this week or have done this week that I didn’t blog about.
I’ll give it a try and if I like doing this…I might make it a regular post…
Here goes…
On Sunday I removed all the old color from my hair-opting or rather attempting to go more natural. I chose a strawberry blonde and ended up a brunette. How exactly that happened I dunno. To my surprise, I like it. I really must learn to leave my hair color to a professional.
I snapped this picture on Sunday in the car with my iPhone. I think I was in a Target parking lot.
Oh yeah…I went to Target and scored a free reusable bag too!

I’ve been baking. I made chocolate chip cookies and merenguitos. They’re all gone now. Eventually I’ll get around to posting the recipe for merenguitos (meringue cookies). I’m nervous that posting the recipe will make me want to whip up another batch. Come to think of it. That’s not a bad idea…I suppose I can blame the baking on the natilla as that was what got me started.
I’ve also been eating a whole lot of celery topped with cream cheese. It’s my favorite snack at the moment.

I’m currently reading The Other Boleyn Girl by Philipa Gregory. This is a book I’ve wanted to read for a REALLY long time. I don’t know what took me so long to finally sit down with it. I think it probably has to do with the list of books I want to read that’s nearly a mile long. My poor “must read” list seems to get interrupted an awful lot by other books-like the ones that friends loan me or recommend.
If you don’t know this about me-I’m always reading something!
I cut all the fabric for my new pennant banner. Unfortunately that’s about all I can do at the moment. It was disappointing to find that my sewing machine (despite my fixing of it) really has gone kaput. The prospect of not having a sewing machine-even though I’m as far away from being anywhere near good with the thing makes me sad. I wonder if I could find one on freecycle?
I’ve been playing lots of knights and dragons with my boys. They are both into sword fighting at the moment. We’ve also been enjoying the nice days outside. I’m already in need of some more sunscreen. I’m forever looking for something that I can wear everyday that is more like a lotion and that doesn’t smell like sunscreen.
In case you didn’t know…I don’t leave my house with out sunscreen. I had melanoma a few years back. Besides that…I hate getting all freckly or rather having my millions of freckles get all dark on me. It’s inevitable I know but I’ll fight it.
I’ve spent hours online in search of bridesmaids dresses. Everything I like keeps getting shot down by Michelle.
I think I’ll tell you about my quest to find the perfect bridesmaid dress for her tomorrow.
I’ve got to run. I’m having a little soiree later today with some gals from my local moms’ group and I’ve got to re-clean a few things. I’m sure my son has managed to miss one of our toilets in the last 12 hours or so…
I’m also going to try very hard not to dip into the sangria I made.
I love sangria.
Toodles!

Susan Wiggs' 'The Ocean Between Us' Blog Tour Stops Here 4/27/2010
My love
ly FedEx delivery person left my copy of Susan Wiggs’ The Ocean Between Us at my front door last week. I was very excited to read this story about a wife of a naval officer who decides she wants to go find herself after years of following her “husband on assignment around the world with their three children.” I’m a few chapters in and have already found myself laughing and a bit teary eyed. As an Air Force wife, this story rings true on a number of levels and I think it would even for a reader not associated with the military.
Please come back on April 27 as The Pink Chandelier will be a part of a blog tour (which also happens to be the day that this book is released in paper back) for your chance to win a book prize pack and a possible guest post by the author herself!
